HTC working on Windows RT tablets, says report

HTC is planning on re-entering the tablet market with the release of two slates running Windows RT, according to a report.

Bloomberg claims that the Taiwanese firm will release a 12-inch and 7-inch slate running the Microsoft operating system in the third quarter of next year.

The company is allegedly planning to provide a larger alternative to tablets from the likes of Apple and Samsung, while competing with mid-range devices including the Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7.

Microsoft and HTC have formed close ties of late, with the phone maker adopting the Windows Phone 8 operating system for its latest wave of handsets, such as the HTC Windows Phone 8X.

HTC has dabbled in the Android tablet market in the past, but withdrew its HTC Flyer, HTC Evo View 4G and HTC Jetstream slates from sale in October to focus on its smartphone business.

HTC is said to have considered the possibility of developing tablet hardware powered by the full version of Windows 8, only to backtrack on the idea when costs were weighed up.
